Simple Truth: Love is Patient

1 Corinthians 13 is an exceptionally popular Bible passage. It is the chapter that meditates on love, what love is, and why love is important.

The first qualifier for the definition of love, as listed in the passage, is this:

Love is patient.

I admit I can be hard to love. Due to my depression, my emotions are even more out of whack than normal for the female species. And because I am a writer, an emotional thinker, and a believer in the validity of feelings, I find myself skyrocketing up and plunging down on intense emotional roller-coasters. I take medication for my depression and mood vitamins to help me relax and feel more in control of my feelings. I also take B-12 vitamins, since these also boost serotonin creation in the brain, which I lack.

My fiance is incredibly understanding about this chronic illness I struggle with. He has shown throughout the 5 years we've been together that he loves me enough to BE patient, STAY patient, and WANT to be patient with me. And I can only imagine how difficult that is.

This morning, I pushed him too far and he got upset, stalking off into the living room and sitting down, facing away from me. I followed after, feeling awful, and apologized profusely. He simply wrapped an arm around my waist, pulled me down, and forgave me. He gently corrected me, telling me why I had upset him, and to please refrain from repeating my behavior. I was awestruck by his quickness to forgive and forget, and I am still feeling so joyous over that moment as I write this.

Love is patient. It's a simple truth, but it is incredibly difficult to live out. Patience is a rare gem to find anymore in today's society. It is practically non-existent in our homes, workplaces, freeways, schools, and relationships.

Love is patient. Patience is at the core of loving someone, as we are all flawed humans who constantly make mistakes, exhibit selfishness, and hurt others (intentionally or not).

Love is patient, and we need to be patient with one another. We must be slow to anger, and quick to love. Quick to show forgiveness. Quick to say "I love you."

Love covers a multitude of wrongs. If love is patient, then patience prevents a multitude of wrongs: blow-ups, unnecessary anger or hurt, and lashing out.

Patience is love, love is patience, and love is patient.

Let's all be more patient with one another.
